Should You Care About More Panda Updates?

Stop the press. Another Google Panda update. Yawn.

Panda is a filter (not a penalty, and not something that will remove you from the search index). It was concieved by a Google engineer (aptly named Panda), and seen though until mid 2011, where it was finally made live.

There have been a few Panda updates, each tweaked with a little bit of a different bias. Mostly, the goal of the Panda filter is to remove thin websites from getting high rankings. What are thin websites? Think about the web sites that have a lot of content that isn’t original, isn’t really helpful, and isn’t really well written. It’s basically a web page full of content for content’s sake.

When those thin pages rank, and users see them, they think Google is doing a bad job. That’s why the Panda filter has been added to the algorithm.

In the next few years I’m sure they’ll be even more Panda updates hitting each month. The SEO community will call it out and continue to write thin content around it. Sort of an interesting circle.
